I’ve been a BoatU.S. member since 1975, as a sailor for years, then, after a stroke, as a powerboater on the Chesapeake. The stroke affected and weakened my right (dominant) arm. I can hold a rod in my left hand, although casting would be awkward. But I could use some ideas on how I might be able to use a reel with my partially disabled right hand. — Saul Friedman Edgewater, MD say, as she does, that “The situation described in the dealer memo involves the port and starboard stays” is incorrect. — Sidney Shaw Falls Church, VA Sneaky Ice In Seacocks A few years ago I opened seacocks on my trawler prior to fall haul-out. When closing and reopening one the next spring during commissioning, a “squirt” occurred about halfway through the range of motion. The squirt was very slight, but upon examination I found a crack in the seacock body caused by the water trapped in the groove surrounding the valve ball. Over the winter this small cavity remained full of water, froze, and expanded. I recommend leaving the seacock lever at 45-degrees through the winter to eliminate this possibility. — Guy Sanderson Glastonbury, CT BoatU.S. Magazine M arch2009 Shrouds Versus Stays Caroline Ajootian is correct that shrouds and stays are both parts of a sailboats standing rigging, which support the mast. However, the two terms are not interchangeable. Shrouds attach to the sides of the mast and provide lateral support; stays provide fore and aft support and run from the mast to the bow and stern of the vessel. To
