Expanded shoulders invite biking and rollerblading. Along the byway you’ll find the Veteran’s Hiking Trail, featuring the new 1.5 mile Bog Walk. You’ll also find the Uppgaard Wildlife Management Area, a 110-acre parcel specially designed to attract wildlife. In the heart of Brainerd/Baxter you’ll discover the 500-acre Northland Arboretum, which boasts nearly 20 kilometers of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, including nearly 5 kilometers lighted for evening skiing. The Nature Conservancy owns nearly 200 acres within the arboretum boundaries one of Minnesota's primary examples of Jack Pine Savanna. Just south of the Brainerd Lakes Area you’ll discover the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, which harbors one of the largest nesting populations of greater sandhill cranes in Minnesota. The refuge offers the Platte River 3.5 mile long hiking and cross-country skiing trail. Birders enjoy a waterfowl observation deck overlooking Skunk Lake. 30 800-450-2838
