NISSWA CUYUNA RANGE Crosby, Ironton, and Deerwood On the Cuyuna Iron Range, 14 miles northeast of Brainerd, the towns of Crosby, Ironton, and Deerwood have a total population of more than 3,400. Residents enjoy the nearby Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area where they scuba dive, canoe, and fish for trout in the clear mine-pit lakes, or bike and hike on the rugged terrain. Strong industries include manufacturing and healthcare. The Hallett Community Center fulfills health club and recreational needs, while the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail system will one day connect to Aitkin, Brainerd, and the Paul Bunyan Trail. LAKE SHORE Lake Shore encompasses 18 square miles and many, many miles of prime shoreline. The City of Lake Shore is home to a large portion of the Gull Chain, one of the premier chains of lakes in Minnesota. In addition, the western portion of the city is quite rural, with rolling fields and wooded areas, perfect for hobby farms. Lake Shore offers a wide variety of restaurants, many of which you can get to by simply boating up to their docks. Nisswa (population 2,048) is a “city of lakes,” containing all or part of seven lakes. It’s a popular destination, with unique shops, restaurants, and festive seasonal events along the paved Paul Bunyan Trail. PEQUOT LAKES/ BREEZY POINT Pequot Lakes (population 1,956) has a beautiful town square adjacent to the Paul Bunyan Trail and the city’s annual Bean Hole Days festival has received national attention. Garrison, on the north shore, has a population of 228. Shops, restaurants, state parks, lodging, golf, fishing, and recreation abound. Vegas-style gambling is found at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s casino, and fishing launches guide groups of up to 50 people to EAST GULL LAKE East Gull Lake (population 1,020) is nestled along the southeastern shore of Gull Lake.
