Brainerd Lakes 2008 Relocation Guide - (Page 17) Trailing Through Downtown Brainerd Her goal is to make the downtown area safer, more vital, and more accessible. That’s what keeps Stella Mary Hegg, an energetic volunteer board member with Brainerd Restoration, focused on connecting the Cuyuna Lakes and Paul Bunyan State Trails through downtown Brainerd. The vision for this trail includes more than recreational biking, hiking, and inline skating. It will provide a safe, designated transportation corridor throughout the downtown area that is completely accessible to people with disabilities. It will also benefit non-motorized commuters, downtown workers who want to exercise during the day, and anyone wanting to bicycle between Baxter and Brainerd. “We want to welcome the trail and its users,” Hegg explains. “We thought it would be a huge lost opportunity if we didn’t say, ‘Please come through downtown Brainerd.’” So far, the grant funding and trail route have been solidified. Plans include historic lighting to match what already exists in the downtown area, and a welcome center with public restrooms and off-street parking. Construction will begin in 2010. This project, which involves the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, downtown businesses, and governmental and private entities, will also complete the Mississippi River Trail, which runs from the headwaters to the Louisiana Delta. The only section missing was the connection between the Cuyuna Lakes and Paul Bunyan trails. “Now that we have a plan and federal funding, we’re no longer the missing link,” says Hegg.
