Brainerd Lakes 2008 Relocation Guide - (Page 27) Rejuvenating Main Street Brainerd’s downtown area is experiencing the revitalizing effects of the national Main Street Four-Point approach, which has been refined through use in more than 1,700 communities across the country. In Brainerd, “Main Street” is defined as the area between the Mississippi River east to Eleventh Street and from Kingwood Street south to Oak Street. This downtown area encompasses two very different commercial areas: Washington Street, a highway-style vehicle-focused corridor, and the existing downtown area, which is more pedestrian-focused. The goal of the Main Street project is to help the two areas work together for the benefit of both, according to Emily Roragen, the Brainerd Lakes Chamber’s main street coordinator. The focus will be on four areas: or ganization, pr omotion, design, and economic restructuring. “We facilitate the use of existing programs and resources, like the Small Business Development Corporation and the Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corporation,” explains Roragen. “We also want to find out what other resources businesses would want to take advantage of, like seminars on different businessrelated topics.” Procedures from the time-tested Main Street model will revitalize the heart of Brainerd’s central business district and benefit residents, visitors, and businesses alike. If you want to participate, now is the time. explorebrainerdlakes.com 27 http://explorebrainerdlakes.com/
