CTC–Consolidated Telecommunications Company now provides both to Lakes Area residents who were previously limited to painfully slow dial-up Internet access. Two towers now beam high-speed Internet service to customers around Gull Lake, in some areas of Nisswa, northeast Brainerd, and south toward Camp Ripley. Connecting to this new service is easy. Simply call CTC. If your location qualifies for the wireless signal, CTC will send you a wireless modem. Then, says Andy Isackson, of CTC’s marketing communications, “you basically plug it into your computer.” As an added benefit, all subscribers can take their wireless modems anywhere within the service area and get a high-speed connection, as long as there is an accessible power supply. According to Isackson, this project was conceived because many Lakes Area residents could not receive high-speed Internet service. So the CTC team researched possible solutions and chose to acquire the 700 MHz spectrum, auctioned by the FCC, which formerly carried UHF television signals.
