Go shopping and you will see a community’s public face. Venture into the cafes and restaurants and you will learn its personality. As our towns reveal their character, the best way to experience them is to park your car and stroll the sidewalks. In the Lakes Area you can browse, shop, snack, relax, and dine to your heart’s content. Although Crosby is known as the “Antique Capital of the Lakes Area,” there are also fine antique shops in Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, and Pillager. Little Falls is the home of the Pine Grove Zoo and the boyhood summer house of aviator Charles Lindbergh. You can bike through miles of woods and lakes along the Paul Bunyan Trail, stopping in towns along the way for a healthy vegetarian meal, an energy-boosting latté, or simply a rest on a shady park bench. Take a scenic drive to any of our lakeside dining destinations—or motor up in your boat and tie up at the dock. Either way, you’re always welcome and you’re sure to have a good time. Lakeside dining can be enjoyed in a variety of Lakes Area settings—venues are as varied as menus. Dining at the water’s edge is a Lakes Area specialty and can be enjoyed in a variety of settings. From the fast-paced energy of pizza and sandwiches to casual gourmet elegance, you’re sure to find a water-side vista and venue that suits your mood. The busy Highway 371 corridor through Baxter is dotted with familiar franchises and independent establishments. Everything from chicken wings and steaks to 1950s-style burgers and malts is within easy reach. For a special treat, stop in at Chef & Company in Baxter, the “kitchen store with cooking classes.” Since opening in May 2006, they have hosted classes for families, business groups, organizations, and anyone else interested in learning more about food preparation. Co-owners Julie Minor and Priscilla Balmer, along with in-house chef Chad Minor, researched the idea of combining a kitchen store and cooking classes, and decided it was a great fit for the Lakes Area. “It’s an entertaining experience,” says Balmer. Attendees get hands-on training, they get to sample the delicacies that are prepared, and they get to keep the recipes. It’s hard to beat that.
