Some travelers, like Barb Durham, are pleased to find out the Lakes Area offers special accommodations for extended business stays. In the heart of winter, Durham, a nursing supervisor for the State of Minnesota, spent eight weeks working in Brainerd. During that time, she stayed at the Hawthorn Inn & Suites in Baxter, Mondays through Thursdays, then commuted back to her home in Park Rapids. When she checked out one week, she’d book her stay for the next week. “They would let me come back to the same room if I wanted to,” says Durham. “The staff is very friendly and we got to know each other over the time I stayed there. They have wonderful hot breakfasts in the morning and I always enjoyed the free newspaper.” General manager Kristine Hoheisel says she enjoys catering to her extended-stay guests. In fact, she offers two categories, extended weekly and extended monthly, to Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport offers a 30-minute connection to the Minneapolis/St. Paul international airport. people who need more than just a room for a night. Hawthorn also has three apartments that have kitchens, spacious living areas, two queen-size beds, and a sofa-sleeper. These units are popular with families moving into the area who need temporary lodging while they are looking for a home. For Durham, business travel was an aberration from her normal schedule. However, many Lakes Area residents and business people travel regularly. For air travelers, the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport recently expanded with a second runway engineered to handle all the weather our four seasons can generate. This airport is an official point-of-entry into the secured areas of airports nationwide, and is just a short 30- minute flight from the international airport in Minneapolis/St. Paul. But if flying doesn’t work for you, try the Reichert limousine service or one of our shuttle services. Executive Express and Lakes Express both offer regular shuttle service to the Twin Cities from several points throughout the Lakes Area. Three major highway systems converge here, making it an easy driving destination from any direction—Minneapolis/St.Paul, Duluth/Superior, Fargo/Moorhead, Mankato, the northern Iron Range, or Sioux Falls, South Dakota. So, for business or pleasure, traveling around the Lakes Area is easy, convenient, and scenic. A quick trip and you’re at your destination before you know it. 34 Brainerd Lakes Area Business & Relocation Guide
