Business and Relocation Guide 2009 - (Page 6) COMMUNITIES lodging, golf, fishing, and recreation abound. Vegas-style gambling is found at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s casino, and fishing launches guide groups of up to 50 people to the hottest fishing spots. In winter, an “ice community” forms with more than 5,500 fish houses, plowed roads, and street signs. IF YOU’RE P YING A FOR YOUR NISSWA Nisswa (population 2,048) is a “city of lakes,” containing all or part of seven lakes. It’s a popular destination, with unique shops, restaurants, and festive seasonal events along the paved Paul Bunyan Trail. PEQUOT LAKES AND BREEZY POINT Pequot Lakes (population 1,956) has a beautiful town square adjacent to the Paul Bunyan Trail and the city’s annual Bean Hole Days festival has received national attention. Diverse industries range from innovative technology companies to strong specialty retail development and a 57acre industrial park. Breezy Point (population 1,511) is a growing residential area anchored by tourism. The Paul Bunyan National Scenic Byway connects the two communities. PILLAGER, MOTLEY, AND STAPLES Pillager (population 470), located on the scenic Crow Wing River, is the gateway to the Lincoln Lakes area and the Pillsbury State Forest. Staples (population 3,150) and Motley (population 673) are adjoining communities that grace the western edge of the Brainerd Lakes Area along Highway 210 west. PINE RIVER AND JENKINS Picturesque Pine River (population 954) is located on Norway Brook, which flows into the Pine River. The city offers a wonderful small-town atmosphere and a strong and diverse year-round economy—based on tourism, logging, agriculture, and service industries—due, in part, to the fact that five highways merge there. Neighboring town of Jenkins (population 339) is considered the gateway to the Whitefish chain of lakes -- one of the favorite summer home and resort locations in the area with the Paul Bunyan Trail passing through this friendly community.
