A link on the Big River Magazine home page takes you to a map of the river from the Twin Cities to Muscatine, Iowa. Click on any of the cities to open a National Weather Srvice forecast for that city. Click the “back” button to return to the map to check other cities. Iowa DNR issues fish advisory The Iowa DNR has issued a warning against eating more than one meal per week or four meals per month of predator fish such as walleye, sauger, bass and northern pike caught in Pool 12 (from Dubuque to bellevue, Iowa) in the Mississippi River. Tests showed these fish to be high in mercury, which over a long period of time, can damage brain, kidneys, lungs and developing fetuses. No single source is suspected. Industrial pollution from coal-burning power plants is a prime source, but mercury also occurs naturally. Mayors agree to start going green Mayors from Bellevue, Davenport, Decorah, Dubuque and Sageville, Iowa; Rock Island, Ill.; Apple Valley, Bemidji, Burnsville, Eagan, Eden Prairie, Edina, Lake City, Minneapolis, Red Wing, Roseville, St. Paul, White Bear Lake and Winona, Minn.; and La Crosse, Wis. have committed their cities to better river policies. The Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement will strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their communities with antisprawl land-use policies and public information campaigns. They will urge state and federal governments to enact policies to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the U.S. in the Kyoto Protocol – seven percent reduction from 1990 levels by 2012. And they will urge Congress to pass bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation. Sculpture project a success in Winona Last summer you could have seen 14 seven-foot blue heron sculptures displayed around Winona. In September they were auctioned off, netting the city’s Fine Art Commission $65,000 to fund community arts events. Local artists Lynette Power and Bernadette Mahfood came up with the idea and found business sponsors for the herons, which were adorned by other local artists. By the end of the summer, the herons became a popular icon. Many are expected to stay around town. Cleaning up after last summer’s flash floods The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge suffered nearly $500,000 in damage in the flash floods last August in the Winona and La Crosse refuge districts. The refuge has requested funds from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They want to clean up back channels and backwaters plugged with sediment, downed and stranded trees and garbage strewn along islands and riverbanks. Chad Pregracke’s Living Lands and Waters group came to town to remove the big items – a boxcar, cars and boats. This spring volunteers will walk the bottomlands to retrieve smaller debris. – Big River magazine –– INNOVATION AWARDS, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 ––– The True North 34 from no-wake mode that autoPearson Yachts/True North matically sets engine RPM Yachts was the winner in at optimal no-wake speed; the Inboard and Outboard and cruise control.
