She floated down the St. Croix River and into the Mississippi when her inflatable raft was punctured and she was left stranded for three days. After hearing her screams, a Hager City, Wis., fisherman found her in a mess of floating logs and debris. When a head poped up from under a blue tarp, the fisherman said, “I thought I was kind of in ‘The Twilight Zone’ for a minute.” The Pierce County Herald reported that that he took her to Diamond Bluff and called 911. An emergency crew arrived and found her in stable condition, but cold and hungry. The fisherman, Bob Iberg, described her dress as an evening gown, and said she had only the blue tarp for protection. She had a few berries to eat and a butane lighter for heat. She’d spent a month floating downriver, stopping to work at Prescott, Wis., for a while. The Coast Guard had checked on her occasionally along the way. In Vicksburg, Miss., the Coast Guard stopped the crew of a raft whose only power came from a paddle turned by two stationary bicycles. They were coming to one of the most dangerous stretches of the Mississippi. Laura Mattingly, Libby Hendon and James Burkart had already peddled 1,000 miles down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and were headed to New Orleans. The blaze caused an estimated $12 million in damages at the Winthrop Harbor, Ill., dealership, according to local news reports. Crews from 20 departments assisted with battling the fire at Skipper’s Buds boat sales, marina and repair shop in Winthrop Harbor. No one was injured. Skipper Bud’s has several locations in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Mississippi, Florida and Ohio.
