www.scuttlebutt.com March 2008 • Page 25 Hastings bridge spanning Mississippi to undergo repair this summer This summer the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) will repaint and do routine repairs on the bridge. The project will repair deficiencies and preserve the existing bridge until an improved crossing can be built. Plans tentatively will begin in mid-April. The project will take about four months to complete. One lane of traffic will remain open during most of the project. There may be occasional short-term complete closures of the bridge, but emergency vehicles will be able to use the bridge. From April 7-19, there will be traffic restrictions Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while Mn/DOT conducts bridge inspection prior to beginning maintenance work. From early May to early August, one lane of traffic will operate on the bridge. show that the river crossing will need to be four lanes (two in each direction) and constructed without a complete closure of the existing bridge. A scoping study will begin in early 2008 to assess the feasibility of various bridge types that could replace the existing bridge, including options that rehabilitate and use the existing structure. Also, as part of this study, environmental screening will assess impacts and develop a planning level cost estimate. The upcoming scoping study will include two public meetings where community members can share their concerns and ideas with Mn/DOT and each other. The project is expected to cause some backups on local Hastings streets south of the bridge. Traffic impacts and traffic control plans have been developed, and Mn/DOT will actively modify traffic control during the construction phase if necessary. Also this summer the city of Hastings will reconstruct side streets connected to Hwy 61. Improving the river crossing is identified in Mn/DOT’s long-range plans as a need in 20152023. The department has beun to plan for this eventual improvement.
