Scuttlebutt Magazine - March 2008 - (Page 7) www.scuttlebutt.com March 2008 • Page 7 Cobalt 202 – The smallest shall be large Cobalt designers do not discriminate: case in point, the 202. In this the smallest Cobalt, new owners may expect nuances of design born from the thought and planning lavished on our biggest performance cruisers. The 202 is all about long, smooth, graceful lines – all about attention to surface detail, the way in which the sweep and flow of the 202’s lines catch a perfect light. But Cobalt never allows exterior form to substitute for workaday function. In the bow, for example, where the design showcases room, massive seating room that is every bit as real as the flared lines would have one believe. The 202 takes full responsibility for the deepdown comfort of everyone who comes aboard, with plush bench seating in the cockpit complementing the high-back captain’s chairs forward. An optional dinette table waits for the fried chicken and potato salad. Drink holders dot the bow and cockpit alike. Instrumentation is focused, efficient, all function and flair. The helm station is sleek and attuned to the navigational task at hand. Set alongside the black-leather tilt steering wheel, the gauges are accessible, prominent, legible in the extreme. An hour meter and a 12-volt accessory power plug are standard. Optional rosewood inserts for dash panels and the steering wheel dress the captain’s station, even as the optional compass and removable GPS with plotter open the 202 to extended cruises on big water. The 202 has major choices in entertainment centers, from the standard AM-FM CD with six speakers to the premium sound system with XM satellite radio, as the optional watersports tower speaker package blasts the tunes toward skiers and boarders aft. Storage is everywhere, including ski space in the bow. The 40-ounce carpet throughout is removable, with a rivulet pattern optional. Aft, a wet locker serves the extended swim platform with ladder, easily reached via the starboard walkthrough at the transom. For 40 years Cobalt has led the way in thoughtful marine design focused on the needs of the customer, in engineering often imitated, seldom equaled. Cobalt has established standards for the industry. A case in point, the Cobalt extended running surface: as the name implies, more of the Cobalt hull maintains contact with the water at cruising speeds, resulting in quicker planing, firm and true turns, minimized bow rise, and more lift at the stern. New owners of the 202 will soon be talking about their boats’ remarkable stability in all kinds of water (thanks to reversed chines -- another Cobalt innovation), a level of control and nimble responsiveness that the extended running surface makes possible. Cobalt remains in headlong pursuit of incremental refinements in overall design, such refinements as show themselves in the details of the 202’s construction. In the graphics molded into the fiberglass, for starters; classic three-color graphics, glorious and unfading, brilliant today and brilliant tomorrow, another standard Cobalt way of doing things. And supporting the 202’s enduring good looks is bedrock stability arising from the fiberglass stringer system and cockpit liner overlaid with aerospace-strong composite floor and transom. Kevlar reinforces the hull. The windshield brace is stainless steel. The new 202 owner may roam an extensive list of options – air compressors and bow filler cushions, docking lights and transom showers, wakeboard racks and mooring covers, dual stainless propellers and saltwater protection, a stereo remote at the transom, a stainless steel foot tread at the helm, a captain's call exhaust – everything that might make the 202 particularly one’s own. MerCruiser power options stretch up to the 6.2 MPI B3 and its 320 horses, with multiple choices in smaller engines . A dozen Volvo Penta engines are available, topping out with the 320-horse 5.7 OSXI XDP, with closed cooling systems optional on every engine. Cruise control is available for most. The Cobalt 202 continues the Neodesha tradition -- purposeful design and meticulous hand-craftsmanship backed by the longest, most comprehensive warranties in the industry. The 2008 Cobalt is all about long, smooth, graceful lines and attention to detail. WE BUY, SELL, SERVICE, RESTORE AND TRANSPORT THE WORLD’S FINEST VINTAGE WATERCRAFT.
