Page 14 • April 2008 www.scuttlebutt.com Inflator pumps recalled by Stearns because of hazard A West Marine inflator pump manufactured by Stearns Inc. is being recalled because of the possibility that it may explode. Stearns Inc., of St. Cloud, Minn., imported the pumps from China, where they were manufactured (The original importer Sevylor Inc., was acquired by Stearns Inc.) The inflator pumps can explode during use, ejecting sharp plastic parts and posing a serious laceration hazard to consumers. Stearns has received three reports of pumps exploding. One consumer reported lacerations and two fractured ribs. Two other consumers received minor lacerations to the face and chest. The recalled inflator pump has a blue body with a flack handle, hose, and pressure gauge. The pump is five inches (12.7 cm) high and weighs about three pounds. West Marine is printed on a white sticker on the top of the pump housing. A second label contains a “caution” statement along with Ho Lee Co., Ltd. and UL listing information. The manufacturer’s model number HB183BG and the date code 1203 are also on the label. The pumps were sold at West Marine and BoatU.S. stores and through direct sales nationwide from August 2003 through January 2007 for about $60. About 1400 units were sold. Manufactured under the name West Marine Inflator Pumps, the manufacturer part number is 5330717. Consumers are asked to return their inflator pump to the nearest West Marine or BoatU.S. store for a full refund. The INHF and its partners in five states must use $2 million to protect the bluffs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. The gift must be matched five to one, bringing the total to $12 million. The money will be used to buy land along the bluffs or to convince land owners to sign conservation agreements to refrain from developing the land. Anyone who buys the properties would also be bound by the agreement. Mark Ackelson, president of the INHF, said, “We certainly ought to have large expanses of scenic vistas along the Mississippi River and the Great River Road, where there are bluffs. We ought to have large expanses of undeveloped land.” He also noted that protecting the rocky cliffs from development would also protect wildlife habitat.
