Scuttlebutt Magazine - April 2008 - (Page 24) Page 24 • April 2008 www.scuttlebutt.com A man, his boat and a desire to make a difference help clean up the Mississippi Robert Schleicher approached the Minnesota DNR in early 2001 wanting to make a difference in the health of the Mississippi River, its shores, islands and tributaries. Encouraged to become involved in the Adopt-a-River program using his boat and love for the river, Captain Bob has done that and more. He logged his first cleanup on April 27, 2001. By January 2005 it was apparent his efforts were growing, and the need to incorporate was evident. Minnesota Rivers Revitalization, Inc. (MNRRI), a nonprofit organization (501 (c) 3), was born. Their mission is to remove man-made debris along an eighty-mile stretch of the Mississippi River between St. PaulMinneapolis and Wabasha, Minn. Since then, over 140 tons of debris including abandoned boats, large tanks, docks, appliances, tires, bicycles, televisions, computers and every other form of trash have been removed. These efforts can only improve the wildlife habitat, water quality, and beauty of the river corridor. With spring right around the corner, we are anticipating the spring thaw and flooding that deposits more trash along the shorelines and islands. Work not only includes removing debris but organizing volunteers, hauling trash to landfills, monitoring boat landings and shorelines, and the difficult job of dealing with large abandoned vessels. These rusted houseboats and fishing boats can require demolition permits, cutting with steel saws, moving with cranes and/or bulldozers and hauling them to scrap yards. The operations are all very laborA film shot in McGregor could hit theaters in 2009. In postproduction now, “Duck Farm Number 13” was written, directed and coproduced by Becky Smith, a Lake Okoboji (Iowa) native. Smith planned to film on an inland lake, but her executive producer, Terry Timpe of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, asked her to consider McGregor. The film is a character-driven, coming-ofage film that centers on a day in the life of two intensive and costly. The list of equipment required to perform this big job has grown from trailers and trash bags to heavy-duty steel saws and pumps. Fees for landfills, hauling, contractors and operating expenses have all risen. There is a long list of projects slated for this season, if enough funding can be found. A taxdeductible contribution teenage girls who work at a small-town ice cream stand and the middle-age woman who owns the establishment. Ninety percent of the film was shot in McGregor, the rest was shot in the Iowa countryside around Elkader and in Stone City. Smith, who lives and works in Los Angeles, grew up in Iowa and loves the landscape. She could also receive a nice tax incentive. Filmmakers could receive a $25,000 tax will make a difference. The group is asking for funds to help keep them afloat for the coming year. There is much to be done, and financial (and physical) assistance will make a difference. They rely on the generosity of boaters and anyone concerned about the Mississippi and its environs. Smith rented all the equipment, hired lighting and sound crews and purchased all the lodging and meals from Iowa businesses. They also hired many Iowa actors, about 70 percent of the cast. “Duck Farm” will probably make the round of film festivals.
