Register Interpreting weather and using charts topics of free boating seminars May 17 ––––––––––––––––––– Hiawatha Valley Sail and Power Squadron celebrates National Safe Boating Week with seminars. “Onboard Weather Forecasting” begins at 10 a.m. and “How To Use a Chart” at 1:30 p.m. May 17 at the Red Wing Public Library ––––––––––––––––––– online or by phone at www.hiawathavalley ps.org; select public classes; or contact Clare Cox in Red Wing, 763430-5333, wildsplash@charter.net. Registration information needed includes name, address, phone(s), email address, years of and type of boating experience (sail, power, other), port or marina, and VSC request. The weather seminar, while not a complete course, explains how the captain, just using his/her senses, can identify conditions that may be encountered. The seminar explains weather systems, how to understand clouds and their changes, and using changing wind direction, temperature and pressure to hone in on emerging weather fronts. The McGraw-Hill waterproof “Captain’s Quick Guide for Onboard Weather Forecasting” and the USPS seminar booklet will be available to purchase. Charts provide information essential to the safety afloat of the captain and crew. Even with GPS and electronic navigation, the chart is needed to tell what is around and between the boat and its intended destination – wing dams, preferred channels and hidden harbors and marinas. This seminar walks the captain through what he needs to know.
