Scuttlebutt Magazine - May 2008 - (Page 8) Page 8 • May 2008 www.scuttlebutt.com The Marquis Yacht division of Carver Boat Corp. plans to invest $27 million in a major expansion in Wisconsin, which will allow it to produce yachts up to 100 feet. The expansion will bring about 450 new jobs to the area. The company plans to expand its plants in Pulaski, and open new operations in Oconto County and within the city of Green Bay, adja- cent to the South Bay Marina. The project will enable the company to meet increasing demand for its Marquis Yachts through the installation of new production lines and other design and manufacturing support services. Marquis was started six years ago, and has seen “overwhelming success,” Irwin Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Genmar Holdings, said. Genmar company plans major expansion in Wisconsin –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– [Genmar] plans to expand its plants in Pulaski, and open new operations in Oconto County and within the city of Green Bay. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The company’s 65-foot model is averaging a delivery of one every nine days and customers are looking for larger boats. Marquis and Carver operate under the umbrella of the Carver Yacht Group, which is a division of pleasure boat manufacturer Genmar Holdings. “It became clear that we have the infrastructure to support most everything in the boat, but we didn’t have the facility to actually put together the boat,” We've Lowered Our Boat Insurance Rates! We found a piece of land and a facility there that we could work with – that would give us a launching pad to the water, the St. Lawrence Seaway.” Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle announced more than $4 million in state assistance for the project, including a $2.7 million loan and a $600,000 training grant from the Department of Commerce and a $960,000 grant from the Department of Transportation through its Harbor Assistance Program. “This is a great day for our boatbuilding industry and for all of Wisconsin,” Doyle said. “The Marquis Yacht division of Carver Boat Corporation is the kind of competitive, high-end manufacturing jobs we want here in Wisconsin. I am pleased that we could assist the Marquis Yacht Company in this major expansion.” Jacobs noted the financial incentives were important, but were not the only reason the company chose to expand in Wisconsin. “We did check around the United States to look at what other options were available. Frankly, we had some very attractive offers, substantially more in dollars, but the acid test was clearly the people there who are building our Marquis Yachts today,” he said. “The learning curve for that is something that we would not trust anywhere else. Money up front was not the only answer. “The State of Wisconsin did everything they possibly could to help us. The fact is, the sincerity, the commitment and the timing, how quickly they put it together, showed me such a great desire of wanting to work with us,” Jacobs added. Jacobs said he expects the first 100-foot yacht to be delivered in the spring of 2010. – Soundings Trade Only ST.
