Broughton Quarterly - Fall 2008 - (Page 13) MEET TIM ESSER BY SuzANNE BROuGHTON PHOTO BY JEFF AND DANA SIPPER im Esser’s answer to a “bucket list” conversation with his brother 10 years ago has turned into one of the largest charity bike rides in the western United States: the Tour de Palm Springs. “I realized I wanted to do something for my fellow man before I died,” says Esser, whose annual event draws over 12,000 riders to Palm Springs every February. While most of us would have gone on with our lives as usual after a late night talk, Esser decided to act on his wish and scheduled a cross-country ride for charity in the coming months. “I hadn’t even been on a bike in 35 years,” he laughs. Since that first ride, the event has raised over $1.5 million for local charities and groups such as the Boy Scouts, Law Enforcement Agencies, and local high schools. “We realized that these are the people who really appreciate and need the help,” says Esser. Designed to include the whole family, the ride is comprised of five separate events designed to fit each rider’s skill level: from five to 100 miles. Offering live entertainment, a bicycle expo, and a $10 pasta dinner, Esser’s dream has been voted “The Best Event in the Valley.” Q T HOW TO Cross something off your own bucket list.
