I blinked and our magazine is already approaching its three-year anniversary. Those of you who have followed the publication have likely noticed that it has matured season by season, year after year. And with this issue I like to think we’ve hit a new level. We’ve adjusted a few of our regular sections and contemporized the design. It’s not the end, of course. In fact, it feels like we’ve just begun to hit our stride. Look for plenty more evolution in the issues ahead. We’re always interested in feedback from our readers, and we use it as something of a guide, shaping the magazine to meet your expectations. Many of you have offered suggestions, but no one (except maybe me) has wanted improvement more than our editor, Matt Katz, and my wife and contributing editor, Suzanne Broughton. A sincere thanks to each of them for their input, creativity, and dedication. I’m excited about the direction we’re heading, and certain our readers will enjoy the trip. Keeping in step with the growth of Broughton Hospitality, we’ve expanded Broughton Quarterly’s on-line presence, joining several social networking sites (page 36) and making an easy-toread electronic version of the magazine available to more readers than ever. You are invited, even encouraged (we’re all trying to be more green), to sign up for an e-version of Broughton Quarterly by visiting BroughtonHospitality.com. As many of you know, we love stories about people who make a significant impact on the world. Case in point: Yvon Chouinard, the reluctant businessman who founded Patagonia (page 30). He’s leveraged his worldwide employees into a force dedicated to a company that’s both financially viable and environmentally sound. We also introduce Tim Esser, who put together the largest charity bike ride in the west, the Tour de Palm Springs (page 13). We’re pleased to honor Tim in our pages, and look forward to introducing more local heroes like him in future issues. From conscientious individuals, we move on to a quirky little artist colony with a whole lot of soul. Harmony (page 21) is one of those intriguing towns you pass on the way up or down the California coast. The sign—“Population 18,” it reads— has probably caught your eye. Places like this are loaded with character. Here at Broughton Hospitality we equate them with boutique hotels: distinguished by a unique style, different than cookie cutter properties that don’t capture the spirit of a place. These are just some of the stories you’ll find on the pages ahead—stories we believe represent Broughton Hospitality and appeal to our readers. Thanks again for your continued support, and please feel free to send us any comments or suggestions.
