So I switched to a fast walk, swinging my hips back and forth the way I’d seen in the Olympics, and began to do a little better. I started to enjoy the sights along the route. Locals stared at us crazy tourists, and little kids yelled the only English phrases they knew: “Hello! Where are you from?” I started moving up on the crowd of runners, and now suddenly I was passing a few people—and a few more. As we entered Kuta, race volunteers were encouraging us, shouting that the finish line was only a little further. From somewhere, I found a burst of energy. I kicked out and ran the final few blocks. As I crossed the finish line, I was greeted with a cheer of “Number Three Woman!” Even now, being Number Three Woman is one of my proudest accomplishments. Our final day in Bali was as lovely as the previous ones had been, but tinged with sadness that we had to leave the magical island. I paid a last visit to Yoga in his family’s shop in the village and bought some things to take home. As I said goodbye, he asked me to wait a moment and went into the back room.
