Broughton Quarterly - Spring 2008 - (Page 26) one of the fishing barges out off of Venice in an attempt to see if it was legal to gamble beyond the three-mile limit, outside of the jurisdiction of the state. From three miles out to six miles is federal water, and they didn’t have any laws against gambling. So they figured they could legally operate a gambling ship with all of the gambling equipment they wanted. Well, this went on from 1927 to 1938, and 14 different gambling ships operated, each one getting bigger and bigger over the years. They operated right off the coast here. And the city and the state and the federal government were all trying to figure out how in the world to stop them legally. They finally did, but not until 1938. It’s a fabulous story.” MEMORIES OF THE GEORGIAN “I was 21 or 22 when I came back from The War, back to Santa Monica. That’s the time period when I’d go out to The Georgian quite often. It was a nice place. It didn’t seem like a really large room, but it had nice wood tables and booths and a little stage set up for entertainment. There was a bar downstairs and we’d go through an entrance on the side of the building; you didn’t have to go through the hotel. It was a very popular place. We all went there.” The room actually looks very much the same today, right down to the original red leather banquettes. “Really? Wow, I had no idea…The main entertainer back then was Dick Van Dyke, and he had a group called the Merry Mutes. They used to perform at The Georgian all the time. I remember that very clearly. I think that’s actually where he started.” 2 Broughton Quarterly Spring 2008 Original furnishings keep character alive at The Georgian in 2008
