We’ve added new hotels in familiar territory—California’s beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and Palm Springs—and we’ve ventured well beyond the Golden State to Chicago, one of the greatest cities in the nation. This eastward expansion is significant on many levels, and we’re very excited about the prospect of expanding editorial coverage in Broughton Quarterly to include the Windy City. With spring upon us, we begin the 75th anniversary celebration of The Georgian Hotel, the famous art deco icon in Santa Monica. Our editor, Matt Katz, tracked down the man best qualified to tell the story of Santa Monica during the time period that gave rise to The Georgian (and to California beach culture) and put together an article based on his own words. Ernest Marquez grew up on what remained of Rancho Boca de Santa Monica, the land grant given to his family in 1839. Just a little plot of land: 6,656 acres of Santa Monica Canyon. One of the few people on the planet who can even conceive of that kind of real estate is Donald Trump. Whether he’s building office towers, condo projects, golf courses, or opulent hotels, “The Donald” is a lightning rod for attention—and quite often controversy. In the pages ahead, we present a rare interview with Trump in which he offers a glimmer of insight into his own family life. As you’d expect, he takes the opportunity to pump up his TV show, The Apprentice. While some fault Donald Trump as a shameless self-promoter, few can argue with the value of the Trump name. And when he lends his name to charitable causes, magic happens—which is one of the things we find most appealing about this season of The Celebrity Apprentice, where celebrities vie for the top spot while earning money and valuable airtime for their favorite charity. One of the charities Trump has publicly supported has been Susan G. Komen For The Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Komen has become the face and voice of the global breast cancer movement, and has invested a billion dollars in the battle to beat breast cancer. With local affiliates in 125 cities and communities, and advocates at the local, state, and federal level, Komen For The Cure is the nation’s largest private funder of communitybased breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs. Most of us have personal ties to a woman affected by breast cancer—we have some amazing women in our organization today who are warriors in the battle. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, and the most treatable when caught in its early stages. Please visit www.Komen.org to learn how you can help.
