Broughton Quarterly - Spring 2009 - (Page 12) MEET TRACY POE BY SUzANNE BROUGHTON PHOTO BY ABBY HARENBERG “C HICAGO IS A COOL TOWN for visitors; there are so many interesting things to do here,” says an enthusiastic Tracy Poe. A native of Portland, Oregon, Poe moved to Chicago 11 years ago to teach history at DePaul University and instantly fell for the Windy City. “I love it here. My condo has big windows that look out over Lincoln Park, and we can walk to the Chicago Zoo,” she says of her new digs. After years of juggling family, teaching, and charity work, Tracy made a decision. “I stepped away from my academic career to focus on philanthropy,” she says. It was a move that greatly benefited her new hometown, where she was a charter member of Chicago Global Donors Network (CGDN) and currently serves as Chair of the Board. CGDN introduces its members to international organizations and assists them in deepening the impact of their donations and work through education and well-organized resources. “We have a good peer network committed to learn how to make a difference in the world,” she explains. Tracy could also serve as the city’s unofficial cultural tour guide: “If you come to Chicago, you have to go to Devon Street (an Indian/Pakistani neighborhood). You can get the ‘Bollywood treatment’—the clothes, the henna, the threading, the hair, the skin treatments with exotic oils.” She also suggests eating at Hema’s Kitchen, which offers home-style Indian fare. “I always get the tandoori chicken. It’s amazing.” She suggests visitors check out Chicago Cultural Center’s website when planning their trip.“There is always some sort of cultural festival going on,” says Poe. “There’s so much diversity here … Chicago is a well integrated city, and we are connected to the world community.” Q TRACY PoE’S CHICAGo ChicagoGlobalDonors.org ChicagoCulturalCenter.org HemasKitchen.net A STAY IN THE CITY Willows Hotel A graceful hotel with a European flare and upscale amenities. 555 West Surf, Chicago, 773.528.8400, CityInns.com/Willows.
