But I do what I can to keep one of my favorite lines from Don Quixote in mind: “Sanity may be madness, but the maddest of all is to see life as it is, not as it should be.” In this issue of Broughton Quarterly, we feature a number of people who have chosen to break down the boundary between their dreams and reality. Artists are known for this sort of thing. After all, it’s their calling to create beauty out of thin air and imagination. Visualize a pile of chalk, an asphalt canvas, and the idyllic surroundings of Santa Barbara, and you’ll get a glimpse of our cover story, the annual I Madonnari Festival (page 14), where hundreds of artists gather in front of the Old Mission to create large-scale street paintings. Another dreamer seeing his vision materialize is Wen Chang (page 8), the owner of Gaia Anderson Hotel in Northern California, near beautiful Mt. Shasta. Wen takes a holistic approach to hotel development and has received international acclaim for his efforts in building environmentally sustainable hotels. As Broughton Hospitality takes a more committed approach to sustainability, we’re honored to have Gaia Anderson as part of our family. We recently awarded Aimee Beardsley, Green Team Leader and Sales Assistant at The Georgian Hotel, our company’s Honor & Excellence Award (page 9). Her efforts on and off the job—not just her environmental work, but also her undying support of people battling “below-the-belt” forms of cancer—inspire everyone around her. From one side of the country to the other, meet Portland-born Chicago-transplant Tracy Poe (page 12), who gushes when speaking about the Windy City. Her commitment to philanthropy is focused on connecting members of Chicago Global Donors Network with organizations doing great work around the world. Back in Santa Barbara, Gene Montesano (page 32)—restaurateur, philanthropist, and founder of Lucky Brand Jeans—has seemingly worked magic with everything he’s touched, including a nonprofit foundation that has raised millions for disabled children. Gene still believes that America is the land where all your dreams can come true. Here, here! As Memorial Day approaches, I hope you’ll take a moment to remember those who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice. As a group, no one has given more than our Special Operations Warriors, who live and die for our collective dream. You can give back by supporting severely wounded Special Operations soldiers and the families of those who didn’t return. To find out how, please visit SpecialOps.org. The future belongs to those who give us reason to hope. If you look closely, you’ll find visionaries all around us, people who choose to see the world as it should be. God bless the dreamers and visionaries. Thanks so much for your ongoing support, and please feel free to send in your comments and suggestions.
