Parade participants masquerade, glitter, glide, whirl, and rustle their people-powered floats up State Street, filling hearts of all ages with delight. The Alameda Park Festival continues the celebration with live music by local and international artists; foods and beverages from local restaurants, caterers, and nonprofit groups; an arts and crafts boutique with more than 75 artisans and craftsmen; a large “drum circle” formed by parade participants and anyone who cares to join in the beat; and the wonderful floats from the parade for close-up inspection. Musical acts vary from established and emerging local artists to nationally known artists such as Carlos Santana, Moby, and Kenny Rogers. Inspired by the wildly successful Nuit Blanche in Paris, GLOW takes its spirit from the iridescent grunion that live in local waters and come ashore several times a year to spawn in the sand.
