Broughton Quarterly - Summer 2008 - (Page 11) 1000 Words TIBET: GLOBALIZATION by Harry Kikstra Tingri is noT much more Than a dusTy line of Tarmac on the Tibetan plateau. Yet even here, in Chinese-occupied Tibet, where horses and kids roam the windy streets, globalization is on the march. These street kids were trying to get the last drops from a Chinese Coca Cola can, which was probably discarded by a passing climber or other tourist. As a traveling photographer, I have mixed feelings: I want to portray the cultures of the places I travel through, yet I know I am part of the problem. Sometimes a can of Coke just tastes so good—it can even cure a high altitude-induced headache. Meanwhile, Tibet is ignored in the commercial craziness of the Olympics.
