I suppose it all began with summer breaks from grade school, when my brother and I would explore the woods and rivers near my childhood home in rural New York State. As an adult, my most adventurous trips seem to have come during the summer months, and this season the tradition looks to continue. In June I am heading back to Zimbabwe, this time to visit orphanages and meet with business leaders and aid organizations such as World Vision (see WorldVision.org). Since the presidential run-off election will take place while I’m there, I expect an extra dose of excitement. For those traveling closer to home, we’ve offered some suggestions of things to do in “Broughton territory” this summer. Our Calendar section (page 10) isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list, of course. With locations like Chicago and Santa Barbara, we’d end up with a magazine the size of phone book. So instead we cherry pick events that locals rave about. In Santa Barbara, that means two things: Solstice and Fiesta—which, translated from local speak, refer to the Summer Solstice Festival and Old Spanish Days Fiesta, a couple of the most vibrant events you’ll find anywhere. Another biggie in Broughton territory this summer is Taste of Chicago, the world’s largest food festival. And in Palm Springs, the local community calls Villagefest their best event of the year—just so happens it takes place every Thursday evening, as the downtown area comes to life with food, art, and handcrafted items. Those of you who have been reading Broughton Quarterly for more than a few issues have probably noted our affinity for legends, icons, and contrarians, individuals who march to their own beat and stand out from the pack. In this issue we tip our hat to Art Beal, artist, treasure collector, and creator of Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, California (page 20). We also feature an interview with master Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy (page 30). And within our own company, we honor Anthony Veltri of The Willows Hotel in Chicago (page 8) for his ongoing service to our country while serving in the armed forces. Leadership and individualism make up a large part of Broughton Hospitality’s core philosophy. Add philanthropy to the mix and you start to get closer to the heart of what this company is all about. Which is why I frequently use this letter to promote nonprofits we believe in, or have a personal connection to—such as Camouflage Kids (CamoKids. org). Founded by Jeff Nix and businessman Ray Stults, Camouflage Kids purchases college athletic event tickets for the families and children of U.S. military personnel. The game day experience includes free tickets, food, T-shirts, and campus tours, compliments of benefactors, donations, and through an annual fund raising barbeque with some of the leading names in college and professional athletics. Nix was a high school classmate of my older brother, and went on to serve as Assistant Coach at the University of Notre Dame. He then spent 15 years with the New York Knicks in coaching and management roles. I hope you’ll support our soldiers by giving their children the chance for a special day of fun and adventure. As always, thanks for your readership. Please feel free to write in with comments and suggestions. Send your emails to Editor@BroughtonQuarterly.com.
