Solutions - Issue Eight - (Page 2) C reativity and Courage Needed to Address Rising Energy Costs BUCHART HORN is headquartered in York, PA with 21 offices in Florida Louisiana Maryland Mississippi New Jersey Pennsylvania Tennessee Virginia West Virginia Germany One of the major issues facing the United States today is the supply and cost of energy. Gasoline is above $3 a gallon and electric and home heating oil prices are rising quickly. Unless controls are implemented or cheaper supplies discovered, energy prices will cause people to change their lifestyles. Many may not be able to travel far from home or provide adequate heat for their homes. This will eventually drastically impact our economy and standard of living. It is doubtful the United States will ever become totally independent of imported oil, but every effort must be expended to do so. We must improve our utilization of renewable and alternative energy sources and make efforts to conserve and manage our precious energy resources. Renewable energy can be defined as energy from sources whose supplies are regenerative and almost inexhaustible. Examples include: E Wind Power E Solar Thermal and Solar Electricity E Hydropower E Biomass and Bioenergy E Ethanol E Geothermal E Landfill Waste, Wastewater Plants and Animal Waste E Ocean Energy The utilization of renewable and alternative energy sources is increasing but not at the rate it needs to be. Public opposition exists in many places and siting and permitting obstacles make projects difficult to finance and implement. We still have the "not in my backyard" syndrome alive and well throughout the country. The public clamors for cheaper energy prices but is not willing to accommodate the solutions. State and federal legislators have increasingly put forth energy programs and policies but have not really adopted far reaching comprehensive legislation. If we could just harness some of that political wind! We at Buchart Horn encourage the continued growth of innovative and alternative energy technologies and their applications. We support the US Conference of Mayors and AIA in their initiative to make all new buildings carbon neutral by 2030.
