Solutions - Issue Eight - (Page 8) Robot Accelerates Project Schedule Repainting a 128’ high, 775,000-gallon water tank and capturing the sandblasting and paint residue traditionally involves creating a giant plastic "cocoon" on the scaffolding erected around the structure. With engineering and construction management expertise provided by Buchart Horn, West Manchester, Pa Township's repainting of the Brenda Road tank relied on a totally new method that saved time and money. The painting contractor, Rockwood Corporation, relied on a "robot" blaster that uses metal shot and vacuums everything, shot and residue, back into a magnetic separator. The shot is stored for reuse, and the paint particles are collected into 55-gallon drums for disposal. Normal sandblasting techniques would have created a significantly larger amount of residue to handle and dispose. Since the vacuum collects the residue at the point of shot blasting, wrapping the tank was unnecessary, even though an elementary school is nearby. After cleaning the tank, workers avoided spray painting by rolling on the new coating. This eliminated paint overspray being blown onto adjacent buildings and vehicles. The process helped the contractor complete a 120-day contract for painting the tank both inside and outside in only 40 days, without any adverse effects on neighboring properties. St. Tammany Parish Airport After discussions about airport expansion with adjacent property owners at St. Tammany Regional Airport in Louisiana, the Abita Springs Timber Company offered to donate 317 acres of land needed to meet long-term goals at the general aviation airport. Plans for expansion followed a Buchart Horn feasibility study that inventoried existing facilities and operations, forecasted aviation demand, and assessed local development trends and opportunities for economic growth. Upgrades designed by the Firm will include new corporate and T-hangars, new ramps and taxiways along with a 1,250’ runway extension to the south that will create a 3,999’ runway designed to accommodate corporate jets. St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis points out the importance of a local airport to regional growth, "A modern, centrally located airport that can service business, public safety, and recreational needs will be an asset to our economy." An additional donation of land from a property owner to the west of the airfield, will help clear potential hazards. Upon completion of these upgrades, estimated at $6,000,000, St. Tammany will provide businesses and industries an extended runway with improved safety zones. 8
