Year in Review MARCH The 2011 Award for Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement was awarded to the Buffalo State Professional Development Schools (PDS) Consortium by the National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS). Started in 1991, Buffalo State’s PDS now includes 45 member schools throughout Western New York, including 21 schools in the city of Buffalo, 18 of which are Buffalo Public Schools. The purpose of the PDS is to develop highly qualified teachers; provide professional development to practicing teachers, administrators, and professors; improve the learning of young students; and conduct research to continuously improve learning outcomes for students as well as competencies among practitioners. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, ’83, hosted the Buffalo State men’s basketball team at City Hall to celebrate the Bengals’ SUNYAC championship and run to the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA Tournament. Brown issued proclamations to the Bengals’ players and coaches summarizing the season and officially declared March 16, 2011, as “Buffalo State Men’s Basketball Day” in the City of Buffalo. The Bengals finished their season at 23-7, including winning the school’s 18th SUNYAC championship. The team defeated Gwynedd-Mercy and Johnson & Wales to advance to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996. 16 School, and PS 94 West Hertel Academy visited five learning stations in the Science Building and learned about college life. Susan Schmidt Bies, ’67, a past member of the Board of Governors of the United States Federal Reserve System, headlined the annual Economics and Finance Forum on April 14. Speakers at the forum discussed current and future economic conditions from local, national, and international perspectives as well as the current and future condition of financial markets. Bies served on the seven-member Federal Reserve board from 2001 to 2007. The 54th annual Honors Convocation was held on April 21 in Rockwell Hall Auditorium. The ceremony recognized 1,124 students for outstanding academic achievement. All invited students earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and accumulated a minimum of 45 credit hours at Buffalo State (30 for transfer students). The 13th annual Student Research and Creativity Celebration took place April 28-30. The celebration, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Horace “Hank” Mann, included more than 270 presentations of student research work and featured performances (music, theater, and dance), visual arts, talks, posters, and demonstrations. Buffalo State’s 14th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala raised more than $275,000, benefiting 200 students in the All College Honors Program and making the gala the single most successful fundraiser in the institution’s history. The event, themed “Because of Buffalo State,” was held on April 30 at the Connecticut Street Armory. One hundred percent of the net proceeds raised from the gala directly support student-scholars. The gala was hosted by president Aaron Podolefsky and his wife, Ronnie, and co-chaired by Anthony J. Baynes, ’79, and Louis P. Ciminelli. More than 400 guests attended, including congressman Brian Higgins, ’85, and Erie County executive Chris Collins. The A.J. Baynes Group, LP Ciminelli, M&T Bank, and Niagara’s Finest Inns were this year’s presenting sponsors. Since this event was established in 1998, more than $1.5 million in scholarship funds have been awarded. Zoo and wildlife expert Jack Hanna brought his “Into the Wild Live” show to the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall on March 21. The show, which provided insight into the protection and conservation of some of the planet’s most precious and endangered species, was presented by United Students Government. APRIL Buffalo State’s Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education (CEURE) hosted nearly 500 children from the Buffalo Public Schools as part of the project “I Am College Bound.” The first- and second-graders from PS 39 Martin Luther King School, PS 45 International Foundation Scholarship Gala B U F FA L O S TAT E C O L L E G E
