Buffalo State Among Chronicle's 2011 Great Colleges to
Work For
The Chronicle of Higher Education selected Buffalo State as one of its
2011 “Great Colleges to Work For.” The results were based on a survey
of more than 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities. Among
large four-year colleges and universities—those
with 10,000 or more students—Buffalo State
was one of 10 institutions to receive special
recognition in the following categories:
Collaborative Governance and Professional/
Career-Development Programs.
Professor Named as Finalist for Prominent Civic Award
Gary Welborn, associate professor and chair of the Sociology Department, was selected as one of four finalists for a major national award,
the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award sponsored by
Campus Compact. The award recognizes tenured faculty for exemplary
leadership in engaged scholarship, advancing students’ civic learning,
conducting community-based research, fostering reciprocal community
partnerships, and other means of enhancing higher education’s
contributions to the public good. Since his arrival at Buffalo State
in 1993, Welborn has worked tirelessly to strengthen the college’s
relationship with its West Side neighbors.
Student Research Presented on Capitol Hill
Elisabeth Gallant, ‘12, was one of 74 students selected from among 850
applications to present research as part of the “Posters on the Hill” event
in Washington, D.C., in April. The Council for Undergraduate Education
presents the annual event to help members of Congress understand the
importance of undergraduate research. Gallant, a geology major, shared
her research on Ilamatepec, the largest volcano in El Salvador.
Buffalo State Named to National Community Service
Honor Roll
For the sixth year in a row, Buffalo State was named to the President’s
Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in recognition of
its strong commitment to volunteering, service learning, and civic
engagement. The Volunteer and Service-Learning Center handled
the application process for the award, identifying 144,330 hours of

New Museum Studies Master’s Program Unveiled
A new master of arts in museum studies program prepares students for
careers as museum professionals. The 33 credit-hour degree program
allows students to specialize in one of three areas of museum work:
collections management and curatorial practice, museum experience
and education, or museum operations. The master’s program
complements the college’s existing graduate certificate program in
museum studies.
Buffalo State Awarded Military Friendly School Title
From G.I. Jobs
G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning
into civilian life, awarded Buffalo State the designation of Military
Friendly School. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top
20 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the
most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as
students. Buffalo State enrolled 1,308 veterans, active-duty military,
reservists, and military dependents in fall 2011. This represented an
increase of 384 students from the previous semester.
