Wegmans Named Winner of Equity and Campus Diversity
Program Award
Wegmans was presented the 2012 Buffalo State Equity and Campus
Diversity Program Award in recognition of its support of the Global
Book Hour. Hosted at the Wegmans Amherst Street store on Buffalo’s
West Side, the Global Book Hour promotes family literacy and global
awareness. Buffalo State teacher candidates provide an interactive read
aloud, reading strategies and activities for local families, and each child
leaves with a copy of the multicultural book at the end of each session.
Bannon Appointed Director of Burchfield Penney
Art Center
Buffalo State appointed Anthony Bannon, Ph.D., as the new director
of the Burchfield Penney Art Center in February 2012. Bannon guided
George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and
Film, located in Rochester, New York, to national and international
acclaim for 16 years. This is the second term as director of the
Burchfield Penney for Bannon, who led the museum from 1985
to 1996.

Buffalo State Continued Middle States Process
Buffalo State continued the process of preparing its 10-year selfstudy as part of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education
reaccreditation process. This self-study addresses 14 Standards of
Excellence as identified by the commission. A draft of the self-study was
prepared by 80 faculty and staff members, administrators, and students
in anticipation of the spring 2013 site visit by Middle States officials.
Student Apartment Complex Opened
Buffalo State held a ceremonial ribbon cutting in September 2011
to open its new $45 million Student Apartment Complex. The 125apartment, 500-bed facility provides residents with a fully furnished,
state-of-the-art campus dwelling in the heart of Buffalo’s cultural
corridor. The 225,000-square-foot complex is located at Letchworth
and Grant streets, on the west side of campus, adjacent to the Sports
Arena. It is Buffalo State’s largest addition to campus student housing
since the early 1970s.
APPOINTMENTS
Zemsky Appointed Chair of Buffalo State College Council
Howard Zemsky, managing partner of the Larkin
Development Group and chair of the Niagara
Frontier Transportation Authority, was appointed
chair of the Buffalo State College Council in
January 2012 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Zemsky
succeeded John Hoskins, who served as chair of
the College Council from 1998 to 2011.
Three Appointed to Buffalo State College Council
Gary Brost, Linda Dobmeier, ’71, and Mylous Hairston, ’86, were
appointed as members of the Buffalo State College Council in March
2012 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Brost is chairman and CEO of Strategic
Investments & Holdings Inc. He is a former member of the Buffalo
State Foundation’s executive and investment committees. Dobmeier,
’71, is vice president of Dobmeier Janitor Supply Inc. and former chair
of the Buffalo State Foundation. Hairston, ’86, is a longtime local
broadcasting professional.
Community Academic Center Dedicated
Buffalo State dedicated its new Community Academic Center (CAC),
located just off campus at 214 Grant Street, in November 2011. The
CAC provides cradle-to-career programming for youth and families on
Buffalo’s West Side. The programs and workshops run by Buffalo State
and a consortium of community groups include tutoring, literacy
coaching, a middle school girls’ program, after-school art classes, and
English as a second language programs for the city’s rapidly growing
refugee community. A $500,000 gift from longtime Buffalo State
supporter Eleanore Woods Beals, who graduated from Buffalo State
in 1950, and her husband, Vaughn Beals, made the center possible.
