EVENTS The Year of the Arts at Buffalo State The 2011–2012 academic year was the Year of the Arts at Buffalo State. President Aaron Podolefsky declared the theme as a way to showcase established and emerging artists and celebrate the importance of art on campus. More than 300 performances, exhibitions, workshops, and speakers were presented throughout the year on campus and in the community. Thousands Attended Anne Frank Project The third annual Anne Frank Project, held in September 2011, featured 45 events—from art exhibitions to genocide survivors’ stories—and included livestreamed video with participants in Rwanda. Using the theme, “Our Shared Humanity: Looking Inward,” the conference closely examined intolerance, bias, hatred, and genocide. More than 4,000 people attended conference events, which were free and open to the public. Students were a driving force behind the third annual Anne Frank Project. Held on campus each fall, the Anne Frank Project conference examines the ideas of forgiveness, unity, and peace in our world. 5 GIVING Scholarship Classic Raised $75,000 Buffalo State’s prestigious All College Honors Program received a boost from 156 golfers and 12 tennis players who participated in the college’s 14th annual Golf and Tennis Scholarship Classic in September 2011 at the Brookfield Country Club. It was the most successful effort in the event's history, netting more than $75,000 for scholarships to All College Honors students. Michael Bonitatibus, '79, and Gerald L. Cornish, '90, served as co-chairs of the event. Scholarship Gala Raised More Than $285,000 Buffalo State's 15th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala, held in April 2012 at the Statler, raised more than $285,000, benefiting 200 students in the All College Honors Program and making the gala the single most successful fundraiser in the institution’s history. The event was attended by more than 400 guests. The gala was co-chaired by Todd Brason, '85; Kimberley Brason; Paul Hojnacki, '84; and Mary Frances Hojnacki, '85, '05. The Larkin Development Group, LP Ciminelli, M&T Bank, and BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York were the presenting sponsors. ANNUAL REPORT 2011–2012 Buffalo State Hosted SUNY Regional Showcase The Western New York State University of New York (SUNY) Regional Showcase was held on May 1 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State. Nine area SUNY campuses along with the Educational Opportunity Center displayed initiatives and programs that represent the “Six Big Ideas” from the SUNY Strategic Plan and the “SUNY Advantage.” More Than 2,000 Earned Degrees at Commencement 2012 Buffalo State conferred degrees on more than 1,960 undergraduate and 630 graduate students during its 140th Commencement celebration on May 12, in the Sports Arena. The following graduates were honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence: Devon A. Cozad, Chanele R. Haynes, Gabriela Moreno, Morgan P. Morningstar, Carlos F. Cisneros Vilchis, and James L. Wangelin (undergraduate students) and Kaitlyn M. Beachner (graduate student). Beachner also received the President’s Distinguished Service Award. Moreno was the recipient of the President’s Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student and Katie M. Sclafani received the President’s Medal for Outstanding Graduate Student.
