Buffalo State's Siena Program Celebrated 50 Years
Buffalo State’s Siena (Italy) Study Abroad Program held a reunion on
campus in October 2011 to celebrate its 50th year. The Siena Program
is the oldest continuous study-abroad program in the SUNY system.
Since its inception, a total of 2,117 students have participated. The
Siena Program remains popular on campus today, attracting students
majoring in the visual arts, art history, art education, and students of
Italian heritage.
IT Sligo, Great Lakes Center Signed Memo of
Understanding
The Great Lakes Center (GLC) at Buffalo State and the Institute of
Technology in Sligo, Ireland (IT Sligo), signed a memo of understanding
(MOU) in July 2011. Through the MOU, faculty members from IT Sligo
will be able to visit Buffalo State to conduct research with scientists
and faculty members at the Great Lakes Center.
PDS Partnerships Established in Zambia and Chile
The Elementary Education and Reading Department established two
new international partners within its award-winning Professional Development Schools (PDS) Consortium. In May 2012, Hibajene Shandomo,
associate professor of elementary education and reading, led a group
of Buffalo State students to Lusaka, Zambia, to conduct research, and
in June 2012, Pixita Del Prado Hill, associate professor of elementary
education and reading, led students to Santiago, Chile, to teach English
to schoolchildren. The programs are designed to facilitate the exchange
of teaching methods and improve student learning.
Acclaimed director Spike Lee, center, spoke at Buffalo State's
Performing Arts Center. He was joined before his address by
New York State Assemblywoman Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes,
'74, '02 and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, '83.
Spike Lee Addressed Campus
Buffalo State’s Leadership Lecture Series, in conjunction with the Year
of the Arts, proudly presented “An Evening with Spike Lee: America
Through My Lens,” in September 2011 at the Performing Arts Center
at Rockwell Hall. Lee spoke about his career as a writer, director, actor,
producer, author, and educator. Before the lecture, Lee visited with
students from Buffalo State’s television and film arts program. The
lecture was funded by M&T Bank, the Faculty Student Association,
and an Auxiliary Services Grant with support from United
Students Government.
Congressman Higgins Hosted Small Business
Outreach Event
Congressman Brian Higgins, ’85, in conjunction with the Buffalo State
Small Business Development Center (SBDC), presented “Expanding
Your Market: A Small-Business Outreach Event” to local small business
owners and entrepreneurs in August 2011.
Governor Cuomo Visited Buffalo State
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo visited Buffalo State on April 4, 2012.
Joined by elected officials including Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, '83,
Congressman Brian Higgins, '85, and others, Gov. Cuomo provided
highlights of the recently passed state budget to a standing-roomonly audience.
