Hotel Henry Provides Real-World
Experience to Hospitality and
The Hotel Henry Urban Resort and Conference
Center, which opened to the public in May 2016
in the iconic Richardson Olmsted Complex, is
providing real-world experience for Buffalo State
upperclassmen majoring in hospitality and tourism.
Students in Rebecca Tate's Industry Experience
course are working with guests in the 88-bed hotel
as well as handling food service in the adjoining
restaurant, 100 Acres: The Kitchens at Hotel
Henry. The hotel, which features a grand ballroom

and conference rooms, is adjacent to the Buffalo
Buffalo State's Computer Information Systems
(CIS) Department held its fifth annual Computer
Science for High School (CS4HS) Student
Project Showcase and Competition in May 2017.
Funded by the search engine giant Google, the
event is meant to encourage more advanced
computer concepts and activities in teenagers.
Students demonstrated 45 projects ranging from
robotics to mobile apps at the competition, which

also included an "hour of code" to introduce
participants' younger siblings to programming.
The CIS Department teamed up with Google
again in June to offer the sixth annual CS4HS
workshop for local high school teachers. Roughly
50 STEM and computer science teachers from
schools throughout Erie, Niagara, and Chautauqua
counties attended the free training. Google recognized Buffalo State for having one of the leading
CS4HS programs in the country at the Computer
Summer Music Institute Returns
for Fourth Year.
Buffalo State's Music Department hosted its Summer
Music Institute for area middle and high school
students for the fourth consecutive year in 2016.
The institute is open to students entering seventh
through 12th grades who are proficient on a string,
wind, or percussion instrument and are able to
perform in ensembles. Rick Fleming, associate
professor of music and director of the college's jazz
and wind ensembles, founded the Summer Music
Institute in 2013. Students study with music faculty
and other professional musicians. The Jazz Camp
offers big band sessions, theory and arrangement
instruction, jazz improvisations, and combos. The
Classics Camp includes large ensemble rehearsals,
theory and aural perception instruction, and special
seminars in conducting, computer music, and
African drumming. Both camps culminate with a
Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Leadership
public performance in the Performing Arts Center
Summit in Baltimore, Maryland, in July 2016.
