Direct effect: Income, employment, or output due to the direct purchase of goods and services. For example, a college with 500 employees on the payroll hires a contractor that employs 50 people. The direct effect is 550 employees. Indirect effect: Income, employment, or output due to demand created by the direct effect. Using the previous example, the newly hired contractor increases his or her staff by 10 employees to meet additional demand created by the college contract. The indirect effect is 10 employees. Induced effect: Income, employment, or output induced by the expenditure of direct and indirect income. Using the examples above, college employees and contractor’s staff use their income to purchase food, shelter, and entertainment. Providers of these services hire an additional 50 workers to meet this demand. The induced effect is 50 employees. Total effect: The sum of direct, indirect, and induced effects.
