O P E N D O O R S , O P E N M I N D S From the Great Lakes Center and the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall to the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Ice Arena, Buffalo State’s doors are open to serve our community. Every day, all ages are welcome to attend lectures, gallery openings, plays, musical performances, films, and workshops or use our athletics facilities or library. Many of these activities are offered free of charge. Buffalo State College is the only SUNY institution that operates an on-shore experimental laboratory on Lake Erie. The Great Lakes Center brings together faculty from seven academic departments to offer programs in watershed hydrology, water quality, environmental toxicology and chemistry, aquatic ecology, fisheries, urban ecology, and environmental education. The center’s fleet of research vessels can deploy a variety of water and biological sampling devices and electronic monitoring equipment. Hundreds of public school students visit the center each year to better understand their role in protecting our environment. The center serves the Western New York and Southern Ontario regions as a resource for resolving environmental issues and provides guidance to lawmakers, industry, and environmental groups to promote the economy and sustainability of the Great Lakes. E. H. Butler Library functions at the center of academic endeavors at Buffalo Great Lakes Center studies have included: > Land use of the Scajaquada Creek watershed. > Links between Great Lakes pollutants and the occurrence of cancers. > The Buffalo sewage system’s impact on the Buffalo and Niagara rivers. > Cayuga Creek sediment erosion modeling. > Rainfall with bacterial levels at Erie County beaches. > “Green” operations for area hotels. 8 State, with more than 530,000 books, 41,000 serials and journals, and 1 million research materials. Members of the community and alumni of Buffalo State are welcome to join the Friends of E. H. Butler Library to receive borrowing privileges. Individuals affiliated with SUNY institutions and those from non-SUNY local colleges and universities participating in the Library Access Project (LAP) can also obtain borrowing privileges. More than 50,000 patrons attend more than 180 events in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall each year, including the Great Performers series; Artsplorations, performances designed and produced for young people with accompanying study guides for teachers; and other programs. The smaller Warren Enters Theatre mounts four major productions annually. The Sports Complex, home to the NCAA Division III Bengals varsity teams, hosts nearly 300 events annually, with a
