Contact Roger Hatteberg (319) 753-2410 Snake Alley 6th St between Columbia & Washington Sts, Burlington Burlington, Iowa’s business district was built in a natural amphtheater surrounded by hills. With all commerce situated in this valley, transportation was extremely difficult for the residents living on the steep hills surrounding the downtown. The Burlington citizens realized that a new and improved form of road system was needed for travel to and from the residential area to the business district. In 1894, Snake Alley was constructed. This experimental street design was divised by three Germans from models of vineyards paths in France and Germany. Charles Starker, William Steyh, and George Kriechbaum created a street that made transportation in Burlington much easier for its citizens. With its many twists and turns, Robert Ripley of Ripley’s Believe It or Not named Snake Alley as the “Crookedest Street in the World.” Snake Alley rivals Lombard Street in San Francisco for the honor. 620 Washington St, Burlington (319) 754-8069 www.artguildofburlington.org Located in the Arts for Living Center, a former church at the corner of Washington and 7th streets, the Art Guild of Burlington offers art exhibitions and other programming in its gallery, a sales shop featuring affordable work by local and regional artists and craftspeople, and art classes for adults and children. Gallery admission is free. Art Guild of Burlington Territorial Capitol Burlington was the first capital of the Iowa Territory from 1838 to 1840, and the second capital of the Wisconsin Territory prior to that, 1837 to 1838. Although the building no longer exists, a historical marker may be found at its site on Third between Washington and Columbia Streets. Today, the brick paving is still the original that was used in construction over more than one hundred years ago. Visitors are still allowed to travel this unique street with five half-curves and two quarter-curves over a distance of 275 feet, desending 58.3 feet from Washington Street to Columbia Street. In 1974, Snake Alley was nominated to the National Register of Historical Places.
