In terms of the bottom line, the uranium industry has been hit especially hard by the accident – as of April, uranium stocks dropped between 30 to 40 percent. While the thought of a nuclear meltdown conjures up memories of Chernobyl for many of us, the nuclear power industry asks for prudence when jumping to conclusions about Fukushima. “As tragic as the events in Japan are, when the dust settles, something will become real and apparent,” says Amir Adnani, president and CEO of Uranium Energy Corp. “There simply is no credible alternative to nuclear power when it comes to a base load, emissionfree energy source.” Adnani cites the fact that there are still 425 reactors operating safely throughout the rest of the world that provides about 16 percent of the worldwide electrical supply. He believes other sources of energy – oil, specifically – caught a break considering the nuclear power facility was still standing after an earthquake and a tsunami, albeit with major damage. “This was not a manmade error,” Adnani states. “The silver lining here is that nuclear reactors are safe. When every other energy infrastructure was torn down, this was the only one left.” ❍ Business Media Publications 200 East Randolph St. 70th floor Chicago, IL 60601 312-447-5800 CANADA POST: Publications Mail Agreement No. 41089016.
