Energy & Infrastructure - Winter/Spring 2011 - (Page 14)

(conflict abroad) BY DAVID HOLT An Unstable Scenario Turmoil in the Middle East throughout early 2011 should bring the focus of U.S. domestic energy needs to the forefront of policy makers’ minds. With the unrest in the Middle East and domestic energy policy decisions affecting global energy markets and domestic gas prices, Americans are once again calling for a strong U.S. energy policy to rein in the high gas prices that are eating up more of their families’ monthly budgets and increasing the costs of other consumer goods. The recent events in Egypt, Libya and the Arabian Peninsula have cast a shadow over Middle Eastern oil production given the vulnerability of those supplies to terrorism and military activities in the region. Similarly, the shut-down of exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico by the Obama Administration more than the last year will reduce domestic oil production by 13 percent in 2011. Taken together, these events have led to a surge in worldwide oil prices. In fact, since February 2011, oil prices have increased about $20 to over $105 a barrel, which is already having a huge impact on U.S. energy consumers. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, higher oil prices translate into the average U.S. household spending about $700 more in gasoline than it spent in 2010. According to Cameron Hanover, a 14 (energy + infrastructure) winter/spring 2011 With the military in a two-front war as numerous Middle Eastern nations stage revolutions, the CEA believes the federal government must tap into U.S. energy resources.
