NIOGOLD MINING IS EXPLORING IN AND AROUND TWO QUEBEC VILLAGES THAT WERE FOUNDED DURING THE GOLD BOOM OF THE EARLY 1900S.
NioGold is exploring about 115 square kilometers of mining claims and concessions in the historic Abitibi region in Quebec. The area, which has been mined on and off since the early 1900s, previously has produced 170 million ounces of gold.

al-D’or and Malartic are two Quebec communities that were settled during the gold boom of the early 1900s – in fact, Val-D’or is French for “valley of gold.” Since then, this area – in the Abitibi region – has been mined on and off, producing 170 million ounces of gold. Most of the production in the area was done in the 1960s, and until now, the most recent work there was done in the late ’80s. Today, NioGold Mining Corp. has occupied the area to further explorations and mining efforts. The company plans to leverage its strong land holdings to take advantage of a 25-year high in commodity prices. “A resurgence of development gold projects has demonstrated, once again, the high potential of northern Quebec's mining regions,” NioGold says. The company started explorations there in 2006, and it is experiencing success in the region, which is the second-largest gold producing area in North America. NioGold holds about 115 square kilometers of mining claims and concessions in the area, and it’s been drilling there since mid-2007. The company has drilled more than 65,000 meters, 45,000 of which were directed at expanding identified deposits. “When we acquired the land, because of the due diligence we’d done, we realized that the previous miners had left a lot of gold behind before closing the mines due to economic factors such as price of gold and recessions,” Lefrancois says. NioGold came up with its resource estimate early this year, with about 598,000 ounces in the indicated resource category and 361,000 ounces in the inferred category for roughly 960,000 total ounces. “It’s been a good success story,” says Rock Lefrancois, NioGold’s president, COO and director. “We’re consolidating the mines, raising money, drilling around the old mines and coming up with close to 1 million ounces [of gold].” The resources are located along a 3-kilometer segment of regional gold mineralized fault zone in and around the former Marban, Norlactic and Kierens mines. NioGold holds a roughly 12.5-mile segment of this prospective fault zone. “The company plans continued aggressive drilling on
