WESTERN CAMP SERVICES LTD. BY KELLY MCCABE Western Camp Services’ offerings make natural resource clients feel at home even in the most remote areas of western Canada. WESTERN CAMP SERVICES MAKES EMPLOYEES OF WESTERN CANADA’S OIL AND GAS INDUSTRIES FEEL LIKE THEY’RE AT HOME EVEN IN THE MOST REMOTE LOCATIONS. The Edmonton, Alberta-based company provides catering and living quarters for natural resource clients. “We supply chefs, kitchen staff, housekeepers – really what it is, is like a motel in the deep bush,” President Menno Admiraal says. “We offer camps and catering, so we move big trailers deep into the bush and set those up for work crews as small as a 20-person camp for a drilling rig to a 500-man camp for oil facilities construction.” Living quarters provided by WCS range from standard arrangements where two people – one on the night shift and the other on the day shift – share a room to executive accommodations for longer projects. Those high-end facilities are more like a motel, with fitness rooms, game rooms and TV lounges. The company’s staff primarily works three weeks on and one week off, a rotation that accommodates the unique nature of the work. Admiraal explains that a shorter project may be about three weeks, at which time the camp will pick up and move with the oil rig. Alternatively, “on one of our bigger operations, we were on one site up in British Columbia for five years,” he says. FALL 2010 http://www.EXPLORATION-PROCESSING.COM
