In 2005, the company began leveraging this experience for the conversion of mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) into mobile offshore production units (MOPU), and this new revenue stream has helped the firm establish an international presence. “What we already bring is a streamlined capability to meet schedules, as well as doing dry dock and pierside work simultaneously,” says Tim Gemmill, operations manager for Gulf Copper’s Galveston, Texas, location. “In the end, if you can turn out a quality product on schedule and close to their budget expectations, it speaks volumes for when the next person comes.” Gulf Copper was founded in 1948 and grew into a pipe fabrication company with a reputation for top-quality work installing copper piping on marine vessels, the company says. It was sold to Gulf Copper Group in 1979, and expanded into a full topside ship repair and machining division. Since then, the company has entered the commercial marine, offshore, shipping, oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, construction and transportation industries.
