Instead, with its continuous investments in R&D, the manufacturer of vertical machining centers (VMC) prefers to lead the way in innovation. “[We try] to be the leader in technology,” he says. Based in Charlotte, N.C., CHIRON America produces machining centers for clients in a broad range of markets, including automotive, aerospace, defense and medical. “Our primary customer is medical device manufacturers [of ] anything as far as an implant or things used in surgery,” Tankersley says. CHIRON started operations in Germany in 1921, and for many years, specialized in precision engineering and the manufacture of surgical instruments.
