mt // M A N AG E M E N T P L AY B O O K Winter 2011 SPORTS HEROES The world of sports has a lot to teach business leaders. — By Chris Petersen It’s the bottom of the ninth and your company is down to its last strike. Suddenly, your rookie sales rep comes off the bench and launches a Hail Mary proposal that wows the crowd and turns into a slam dunk, a real home run. Thanks to this MVP effort, your company gets back on the scoreboard and gives you nothing but daylight for the final lap. Using sports terminology in the business world has become something of a cliché in and of itself. Managers often turn to it because it’s an easy way to fire up their staff and because it translates well. A company, after all, is a team with a “head coach,” its own “playbook” and the “final score” means everything. But beyond simply co-opting the clichés, are there real, valuable lessons business leaders can take away from the wide world of sports? Coaches and athletes have found success off the field by writing books and delivering speeches that blur the line between sports and business. Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy, for example, recently penned “The Mentor Leader: Secrets to Building People and Teams That Win Consistently.” He frequently gives talks concerning leadership and ethics. Some of those who have spent time in both worlds say there are a lot of things business leaders can learn from sports. However, there’s a difference between learning from sports and going so far over// There are more parallels between sports and business than a few clichés. “SPORTS, MORE THAN ANYTHING, IS A LANGUAGE BUSINESSPEOPLE UNDERSTAND.” 8 MANAGEMENTTODAY-MAGAZINE.COM WINTER 2011 http://www.MANAGEMENTTODAY-MAGAZINE.COM
