Course On Sept. 22, in the Cherry Hill Event Room, a group of women gathered for an evening of interesting conversation, good wine, delicious food and Botox. Yes, Botox. Girl Talk, a local women’s networking organization, hosted the event and commissioned Skintuition Medical Spa and DeSpain Dermatology to unlock the “Secrets of Botox.” Botox Cosmetic is the brand name of a drug manufactured by Allergan. It is a purified substance derived from the Botulinum toxin type A, one of several neurotoxins found in food-born botulism. It is injected in small amounts, usually into facial muscles, and interferes with the muscle’s ability to contract. This causes the surrounding muscles to become stronger, and the result is a diminished appearance of lines and wrinkles. It has been FDA approved for cosmetic purposes since 2002. For many women, just hearing the word Botox calls to mind images of distorted Hollywood types, the pinnacle of vanity, desperately clinging to their quickly-fading youth. However, the reality of Botox is something quite different, said dermatologist John DeSpain, who dispelled myths about Botox and explained why he believes the procedure can be a good choice for many patients. “Our average Botox patient is late-30s to mid-40s,” DeSpain said. “And when properly done, the effects are subtle. Many of my patients tell me that they are often asked if they have been getting more sleep lately, not if they’ve had something done.” 48 January/February 2009
