Canisius College Viewbook 2007-2008 - (Page 15) . Canisius College is proud of its alumni, who excel as leaders in their professions and in service to their communities. Read these stories of six recent alumni to see why Canisius is called the place “where leaders are made.” Sean Viola ’04 Social Studies Teacher, Williamsville Central Schools Small classes and the ability to work and teach with technology were a big part of why Sean chose Canisius. He excelled as a dual adolescence education and history major at Canisius, as evidence by his induction into Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. In addition, his student teaching experiences prepared him well for teaching positions in the Ken-Ton and Williamsville school districts. “The Education Department at Canisius is very professional. They gave me excellent information, ideas and techniques that I still use in my classroom today. Both Dr. Sandra Cimbricz and Dr. Walter Sharrow have had a major impact on my philosophy of education.” Jennifer Urbanski ’05 PhD Student, Georgetown University As an upperclassman at Canisius, Jennifer participated in a research project with faculty on migratory birds. She presented her findings at the 2004 national conference of the Wilson Ornithological Society/Association of Field Ornithologists. It proved to be excellent preparation for her graduate work in evolutionary biology at Georgetown. “One of the best things about Canisius is its size. It is large enough to offer a wide range of courses but small enough to allow for a strong interaction between professors and students. I can’t remember a single time during my four years at Canisius when a professor didn’t make time to meet with me.” Nicole Festaiuti ’05 Domestic Licensing Coordinator, Anne Klein New York and AK Anne Klein, NYC Canisius’ accredited business school and active alumni influenced Nicole’s decision to attend Canisius College, where her passion for branding and fashion was brought together as a communication studies and marketing/management major. Nicole gained a sense of responsibility, personal confidence and developed a heightened determination for excellence. “I met Canisius alumna Mary Belle ’73, president of licensing for Jones Apparel Group, through the Canisius Connection. We instantly connected and that meeting resulted in a product development job for Nine West Group. After eight months I was promoted to licensing for Anne Klein and now work directly on Mary’s team.” Michael A. Itani ’04 Annuity Broker Services Representative, John Hancock Financial Services, Boston Michael’s management information systems major and internships provided a solid broadbased understanding of systems, business and communication strategies. He puts this knowledge to work every day with his clients at John Hancock Financial Services. “I really think the overall size of the campus has multiple benefits. I found that I could get from class to class easily, and catch up with friends in and out of the classroom. Having familiar faces in most of your major classes also made it easier to find help with school work or to study for exams.”
