The baking of fishmeal also accounted for the horrendous smell for which Monterey became dubiously famous. Today, Willy’s Smokehouse and All American Grill offers the best barbecue in town in one of the most historic and charming settings on Cannery Row. The historic structure is also home to a new, state of the art IMAX theater, with perfect viewing presentation and exclusive film offerings. “Bear Flag Building” 653 Cannery Row Built in 1929 as an annex to the Ocean View Hotel, the “Marina Apartments” featured distinctive tile “dragon roofs,” an homage to the Chinese heritage of the Wu family. Today, the building houses Bullwacker’s Restaurant, a modern immigrant’s dream, offering authentic pub fare.
