Carlsbad Visitors Guide 2008 - (Page 12) Visiting Mexico • To get into Mexico, a U.S. citizen needs a valid passport. Until June 2008, a birth certificate (either an original or a notarized duplicate) and a photo ID will also be accepted. International traveler needs a valid passport and a multipleentry visa, or visa waiver, to re-enter the United States. Minors (children under 18) traveling alone are required to have written permission—a note signed by both parents (or legal guardians) and notarized. A minor traveling with one parent must have a notarized note signed by the other parent. If one parent has sole custody, or the other parent is deceased, minors must carry papers proving this. • Pets are allowed into Mexico with verification of a rabies vaccination within the past six months. • If you will be driving in Mexico, purchase Mexican auto insurance on the U.S. side of the border. If you don’t absolutely have to have a car for your visit, consider the convenient alternative of riding the trolley to the border and walking across. • The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years. Drinking on public streets is prohibited. Possession or use of illicit drugs or firearms is strictly prohibited in Mexico. Should you require legal assistance while in Mexico, contact your country’s consulate office. (It’s important to remember that you may not enjoy the same rights and privileges you have in your native country.) • A Tourist Information Center is located at the Border Station Parking in San Ysidro, California.
