Carlsbad Visitors Guide 2008 - (Page 38) Driving in California Whenever you drive in California, it’s crucial to remember a few important rules, regulations, and recommendations. • Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times. Any child weighing less than 60 pounds (27 kg) must be in a child safety seat secured by a seat belt. • Only hands free cell phones may be used in a moving vehicle as of July 1, 2008. Teenagers may not use cell phones while driving. • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) is a serious offense in California. A person is considered legally drunk when his blood alcohol level is .08% or higher. The consumption of alcohol in California is illegal for anyone under 21 years of age. • On the freeways, the inside (leftmost) lane is a “Diamond” lane, for carpools. Do not drive in the Diamond Lane unless there are at least two people in your vehicle. • If possible, avoid driving on the freeways during “rush hour”— from 6:30–9:30 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. on weekdays. For up-to-theminute traffic information, check www.sigalert.com. • Parking: Read the meter instructions, as they may vary from street to street, lot to lot, and place to place. Also be aware that restrictions may apply in different areas; always read and obey any applicable signs carefully. Identification Be sure to carry legal photo identification with you at all times. This is required for airline travel, admission to some attractions, proof of legal drinking age (21 in the United States), and in a growing list of other situations. Time Zone Carlsbad is 8 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (-8 GMT). The United States observes Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October.
